There seems to be some confusion between the difference with a spirit and a ghost.  It's easy to get the two mixed up.  Here are definitions for the differences between the two types.

A ghost is a soul who is trapped between this world and the other world also known as heaven or the afterlife. The common term for this is called "being earthbound". They can not visit the other side yet until they have let go of whatever holds them here between dimensions.  There are many reasons for them to continue haunting a place. The death could have happened so quickly or it was so traumatizing that they are not aware of the fact they are dead and think they were still among the living. Another reason could be they that feel they are not worthy of God's love and stay here to punish themselves with the idea that they could never be forgiven for their sins. Others stay behind waiting for someone they love.. a friend, relative, lover, child, parent, or spouse or even for the place they loved and don't want to leave it. As a result, they remain trapped between dimensions.

A spirit is different. As a soul they have already gone to the other side.  They may come back to our dimension and visit anytime they want and return to their dimension at will.. They are usually our ancestors, or a relative or friend who recently passed over to the other side, or our spirit guides (who are assigned to us personally for divine protection). They have free choice to come and go.

There also seems to be confusion about what the Holy Ghost is.  He is a spirit. A very special and divine spirit. By the very nature of his actions he is a spirit who comes and goes at will to anyone or any place, especially when called upon.  Basically, no one is worshiping a ghost, but instead, a very special divine spirit from God.

It can be confusing, as the definition of a ghost does not fit the characteristics of the "Holy Ghost".  It seems "Holy Spirit" would be more appropriate.
